so what?

Some people misunderstood the capabilities of those artist or actor who are running for senator. People thought that they’re running because they are popular. They believed that through their popularity they can convince people to vote them and win according on their desire position. Most of the people say negative towards them. As I heard those bad thoughts I wondered why people kept misjudging them. Is it because we have trauma on what happened on the past? We’ve learned that actors were only excellent only in front of camera and doing nothing when there were in position? Actually it has a point. People were afraid to happen again those bad experiences by voting those people because of their popularity. One good example in this situation was our former president Joseph Estrada even people knew that he was under graduated and uneducated, people still vote him because he was popular. He won as our president, but still he can’t make it. People strongly agreed to impeach him for corruption. He arrested and until now he was in jail. The late Fernando Poe ran as president versus PGMA. But GMA was the one who won, months later Fernando died due of heart attack. And until now every time there were actors who running for position, there were avoidable bad statements towards them.

On the other hand, looking it in positive view, not all actors or artist received such bad feedbacks. Vilma Santos received compliments from the people she handled. People love her and according in television people will support her every time she will run. Tito Soto was former senator he is running again for the same position this year’s election. Though there’s a bit issue in sudden joined in administrative from opposition. But during delivering his platform in convention center he cleared out that he don’t want fight against PGMA anymore, he prefer to have peace and join in her group as member of the Team unity. Cesar Montana questioned also his capabilities but still I heard some good comments for him unlike other artist who’s running in this year’s election.

In my case, it is sad for them to be misjudged, but I can’t blame people to say bad comments on them, in the first place we’ve been through bad experiences. Nevertheless we shouldn’t closed our minds for them, we should give them chance, in the end it is still our own decision weather we vote them or not. We have our own bet. I believed the most important is we have the same goal and that goal is to improve our country.

I also have this sentiment that there are people who judge those artists who run in politics. People have this perception about these artists that it is better if they will just stay in front of camera than sitting in the Congress. Maybe the reasons why they have this perception, because they thought these artists are not skilled in holding the problems in politics and they are just better acting in front of camera. There are others who think they are just running because they are in the middle of their popularity. I don’t think that people criticize these artists because they have trauma in the past election. It just that people are now aware of the different tactics of these people who run in politics.

I just want to correct you that Joseph Estrada is not an uneducated. Actually, Joseph decided to study engineering in Mapua after high school, but suddenly in his third year he drop out of college decided to try the movies. Estrada entered politics when he ran for Mayor of San Juan in 1968. As mayor (1969-1986), he was named one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in Public Administration. He was also named Most Outstanding Mayor and Foremost Nationalist (1972) and Most Outstanding Metro Manila Mayor (1972). So I think, his popularity is not just the reason why people vote him. Yes, he won as our president and was impeach later on. But he just experience impeachment because of the obvious evidence that he really corrupt the money of our country.

This from Archie Sangalang

On your blog about actors running into politics, this is my reaction to your say. It is right that there is something beyond popularity, nowadays Filipinos vote their officials not through their capabilities but because they are a famous face or what they say popular. Same case when John F. Kennedy won the presidential elections, people say he won not because of his capability but because he is handsome.
For me there is something beyond popularity people should vote not because the person is a famous face. They must vote because they believe they can put their trust on you.

There are a number of factors that have made it possible for celebrities to run for elective office. One key aspect of celebrity politics has been the emergence of television and its enormous effects for the political process. But what affects celebrity prospects?
Being famous does not guarantee victory.Political success requires qualities beyond a famous name and celebrity background. Among the factors that affect how well a celebrity will do in the political process is their communications ability, political shrewdness, and ability to avoid the tabloid press. The ability to communicate is the most important quality in political success. Celebrities who are good at relating to the average person have tremendous advantage as candidates. They can overcome their relative inexperience and lack of issue familiarity by being good communicators. The biggest challenge for celebrity candidates is the tabloid press. Being familiar with their past as entertainers, celebrities attract both positive and negative coverage. More so than other politicians, celebrities tend to get very personal coverage. Reporters are much more likely to focus on their background and personality than their stances. This can either help or hurt celebrities, depending on what things are in their past that get uncovered by reporters. Voters sometimes see the celebrity as an amateur and is not up the governing job. If that perception becomes widespread, it is hard for celebrity politicians to govern very effectively.

hi ella, i think it is unfair that other poeple are judging the capabilities and skills of some actora and actresses who are runing for certain positions int he government. they are very judgmental to these people but they themselves are not doing anything so that they could help this country. at least, these actors and actresses have some dreams to help this country.i think these people who are judging them must first see how these people will work in the government before they judge them completely. i am sad for you ella, because your pet has just passed away. i am sad for you because i also know the feeling of somebody leaving you.

I remember in one of our discussions in our Lit class, our professor said, “I will vote for Pacquiao when he runs.” I wondered why she would vote for Manny Pacquiao when everybody knows he’s not fit for a high-level position. But I was enlightened when she said our politicians completed their study and even had their degrees abroad but look at what they’re doing in the government.

She’s right. Whenever I see the credentials of politicians, I am surprised. Most of them had good education but I wonder why they are not doing what they are supposed to do. Don’t they apply what they learn from school?

As a fruit of our democracy, everyone in this country can run. I remember my Philosophy professor back in my first year. He said a ruler must be a philosopher king, which means a ruler must always be competent and higher than his/her constituents. But most of the time, people elect the wrong persons.

PS: Ella, I admire you for being a true person. I admire you for being a smart and experienced person. I am surprised whenever I ask for an advice, you always have something to say about life. Thank you for always being here with me. 

Hi Ella, you're definitely right. Filipinos are really into popularity when it comes to politics. That’s why I no longer wonder about the crisis that is happening in our country. All they care about is popularity and money. Come to think about the money they are willing to waste just to win the election. can't they just help the people without running for any position in the government and posting their pictures everywhere. Filipino people should be aware of the difference between show business and politics. We should put our votes into better use. Time will come when all the money in our country will remain where they are in the pockets of the corrupt politician and celebrities. :)
